A Salute to the Harlem Renaissance: Celebrating Its Contributions and Significance Through Music

Theme:
Artwork should celebrate the music of the Harlem Renaissance period that fostered a new black cultural identity in the 1920s and 1930s.
 
Eligibility:
The competition is open to high school students (Grades 9-12) in public, private, charter or alternative schools in the District of Columbia. Must be a DC Resident.

Entry Fee and Deadlines:
FREE to all eligible participants. Entry period: August 30, 2021- October 30, 2021

Prizes:
1st Place -$300
2nd Place-$175
3rd Place-$100 
Honorable Mention-$50 

Deadline/Submission Details:

Due to virtual operations, participant work must be submitted in one of two forms: Photos or video clips demonstrating the depth, color, and visual definition of the works. Appropriate file format as required. Art Teachers should encourage their students to participate.
*25 Total Participants allowed in contest. Entries submitted after the deadline will NOT be accepted.

Art Entries:
--Create an art entry that expresses the theme and shows the aesthetic qualities of the materials you select.
--Poster Board, Bristol Board, Heavy Paper, etc.
--Only two dimensional works of art will be accepted.
--Students may submit up to two (2) entries.
--A separate entry form must be attached to each entry.
--Artwork may be created using painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic, etc.), drawing (pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, ink, marker, pastels, etc.) lithography, silkscreen, mixed media, computer graphics, and collages.
--The submissions should be not smaller than 16” x 20” and no larger than 24” x 36” in size. 

Subject Matter and Suitability:
The students’ artwork must reflect the theme of the competition. All entries must be the students’ “original” work and not violate any U.S. copyright laws. “Original is defined as artwork that is created by the student (concept, design, and execution). Original is not a copy or imitation of another person’s work. Entries will be disqualified that depict violence, political controversy or doesn’t reflect the theme of the competition. Each student may submit up to two pieces of artwork for consideration.
